Hypnotherapy for Anxiety
Using hypnotherapy for anxiety can help significantly in coping with everyday life. Whilst anxiety is a natural response to stress, it can vary in severity. Feelings such as uneasiness, worry and fear are reactions we all experience. But when those feelings become more intense and longer lasting, affecting how you live your life, it can be the sign of an anxiety disorder.
When you have an anxiety disorder, you can find that you avoid certain situations through fear of it triggering these reactions. This can make everyday life difficult and hold you back from doing the things you want.
In one study of people with anxiety disorders, 84% reported an improvement after hypnosis.
There are several techniques available to help deal with anxiety such as cognitive behavioural therapy, medication, or exposure therapy. Hypnotherapy for anxiety is also a common tool, often used alongside one of the other techniques. Hypnotherapy aims to identify the root cause of the problem and change your relationship with anxiety.
What is Anxiety?
How we naturally protect ourselves is through the ‘fight, flight or freeze’ reaction. If our brain perceives a threat, our bodies release hormones including adrenaline and cortisol to make us more vigilant of what’s happening.
Whilst a great system, it’s not needed as much today, and we can start to feel under attack from normal everyday actions. When your brain perceives attack where there is none and this reaction is triggered, it can cause the feelings of anxiety over common everyday situations. Things such as social events, a work meeting or driving somewhere can all set off your anxiety. You then end up internalising your feelings and find yourself with your heart pounding throughout the day with no idea how to make it stop.
Anxiety becomes a mental health problem when it starts to affect your daily life. If you find yourself triggered easily or have a constant level of anxiety throughout the day, then hypnotherapy can help towards alleviating your levels of stress and anxiety.

If you have higher levels of anxiety, hypnosis works best if it’s used as a complementary treatment alongside another treatment such as CBT or medication.
Hypnotherapy works for anxiety by helping to identify your anxiety triggers. By then using suggestion during hypnosis I can help to retrain your thought patterns to help you manage those feelings when in triggering situations.
The idea behind this technique is that when you find yourself feeling anxious or fearful, the suggestions or calming words will enter your conscious mind and enable you to cope.
What to Expect at your Hypnotherapy for Anxiety Sheffield Session
At your initial consultation we’ll establish the reasons behind your triggers and the way you feel. Then once you’re confident and happy with the process and what to expect we’ll move onto the hypnotherapy sessions.
To start with I’ll guide you into a deep, relaxed state so your mind is more open to suggestion. This state is similar to sleep, but your mind will be very focused and more able to respond to suggestion. I’ll then ask you to think of a time when you’ve felt anxious. When you can focus on the physical sensations and the triggers of your anxiety at that time, I’ll offer calming words or suggestions.
These will be discussed with you prior to the session so you know what to expect.
